EAT HERE: Zabu Zabu Downtown Berkeley

Come enjoy the lounge...

I have recently become obsessed with Shabu Shabu. In particular, Zabu Zabu in Downtown Berkeley.

Shabu Shabu is a hot pot dish that became popular in Japan during the 20th century. It consists of raw assorted vegetables, and paper-thin slices of meat (usually beef or pork) cooked in a savory or spicy broth. The name "Shabu Shabu" comes from the sound the meat makes as it is being swished around in the broth.

One night I was craving something different and I found Zabu Zabu on yelp. Interactive dining is super fun and the "all you can eat" ramen noodles and meat sounded delicious, so we gave it a try.

It's tucked away in Downtown Berkeley, about two blocks from the bart station. Inside feels intimate and there is usually seating available immediately. The staff is attentive and lively, they make the dining experience light and fun. We always get the all you can eat shabu shabu for two. It comes with your choice of broth. The sukiyaki broth is a crowd favorite, but the spicy miso is also bomb. The all you can eat applies to meat (Wagyu Beef, Kurobuta Pork, Beef Tongue, Australian Lamb, Chicken Breast), assorted vegetables (mushrooms, tofus, spinach, carrots) and comes with your choice of rice, ramen, or udon noodles.

You can find Demetrius and I here pretty much every free Sunday evening we have. Try this place, you will thank me. :)

NIGHT OUT: Jack London Sqaure

It's Friday (yay!), which means the weekend is upon us. It's also summer time so I know those who might otherwise opt to "Netflix and chill" on a Friday night may want to come out and play.

Jack London Square is a great place to be on a warm night in Oakland. It's on the water and has so many fun, interesting and delicious spots to explore.

I've put together a night out in Jack London Square. This "itinerary" is great for singles and/or couples looking to explore some new spots. Try it out, have some fun, wear shoes you can walk in!

START  - Rosenblum Cellars

Celebrate the week, toast to weekend at Rosenblum Cellars tasting room. Rosenblum is most known for their Zinfandels. They offer wine tastings, glasses and bottles. It's steps from the Oakland Ferry Terminal and one of the most scenic options for happy hour.

EAT - Everette and Jones BBQ

Zinfandel pairs well with BBQ. So once you've prepped your palette head over to get some BBQ from one of the most well known and beloved restaurants in Oakland. We recommend the sliced beef brisket with mac and cheese, mom's collard greens, and candy yams. But honestly you can't go wrong, so feel free to make your own decions. Whatever you do, don't forget the cornbread.

PLAY - Plank Oakland

After all the wine and BBQ you might want to call it a night. But if you want to keep the party going walk down the block to Plank Oakland. There you can bowl, play video games, or grab another drink. After 9pm Plank is 21+ so you can have some good clean fun, in an adult environment.

Lakefest 2018

Lake Merrit is an essential element to Oakland Culture. When the temperatures rise locals head to “The Lake” to enjoy the sunshine and good vibes. This weekend was a little special because it was the first annual Lakefest. An event designed by Oakland natives and residents to showcase elements of the city we all love. There was food, music, vendors, and most prominently there was the sun.

Community Gardens didn’t want to miss out on all the fun, so we set up a lounge and invited our friends to sesh.
